Opinyon at Pangangatwiran — Opinion & Argument

Take a position, agree and disagree with grace, hedge, and persuade

Lesson 11 taught you to state an opinion. Now, at B2, you'll argue one — take a firm position, agree and build, disagree respectfully, concede a point (Lesson 17), and drive toward a conclusion. This is the language of debate, discussion, and persuasive writing, and Filipinos do it with a strong instinct for staying pleasant while disagreeing.

1. Taking a Position

Open a serious opinion with weight:

PhraseMeaning
Naniniwala ako na…I believe that…
Sa aking palagay…In my view… (formal)
Ang paninindigan ko ay…My stand is…
Para sa akin…For me / as I see it…

Naniniwala ako na dapat libre ang edukasyon. — I believe education should be free.

2. Agreeing & Building On

Don't just agree — add to it:

PhraseMeaning
Lubos akong sang-ayon.I fully agree.
Tama nga naman.That's true indeed.
Dagdag pa rito…Adding to this… / Furthermore…
Sang-ayon ako, lalo na dahil…I agree, especially because…

3. Disagreeing Respectfully

Here's the Filipino specialty — pushing back without breaking harmony. Cushion, then differ:

PhraseMeaning
Iginagalang ko ang iyong opinyon, ngunit…I respect your opinion, but…
Sa palagay ko naman…I, on the other hand, think… (the naman pivot)
Sa kabaligtaran…On the contrary…
Hindi ako sang-ayon dahil…I disagree because…
Soften before you strike. A bare "Mali ka" ("You're wrong") is blunt to the point of rude. Filipinos lead with respect — "Iginagalang ko ang iyong opinyon, ngunit…" — or slip in the naman pivot from Lesson 11. You disagree clearly, but the relationship stays intact. That balance is the skill.

4. Hedging & Conceding

Grant the other side a point to strengthen your own — using the concession connectors from Lesson 17:

PhraseMeaning
Maaaring totoo, ngunit…That may be true, but…
Sa isang banda…On one hand…
Bagama't may punto ka…Although you have a point…

5. Persuading & Concluding

Move the listener and close cleanly:

PhraseMeaning
Dapat nating isaalang-alang…We should consider…
Isipin natin…Let's think about…
Higit sa lahat…Above all…
Sa konklusyon / Sa kabuuan…In conclusion / Overall…

"Naniniwala ako na dapat suportahan ang lokal na negosyo. Maaaring totoo na mas mura ang imported, ngunit lumalakas ang ekonomiya kapag tumatangkilik tayo ng sariling atin. Higit sa lahat, nabibigyan nito ng trabaho ang ating kababayan. Sa konklusyon, panig ako sa lokal."

You can now run a full argument: take a position (naniniwala ako na…), agree and build (dagdag pa rito…), disagree respectfully (iginagalang ko… ngunit, the naman pivot), concede (maaaring totoo, ngunit…), and conclude (sa konklusyon…) — all while keeping the room warm. Next, we zoom into the tiny words that color every sentence: emotion & attitude particles.
