Defining, citing, hedging — and the shape of a sanaysay
Filipino is a full academic language. Universities in the Philippines produce theses, journals, and textbooks in it, and the KWF publishes terminology for it. Academic Filipino is not everyday Filipino with longer words — it has its own sentence shape, its own framing verbs, and a strong preference for hedging over asserting.

Academic writing defines before it argues. The standard frames:

Notice that every one of them is an ay-inversion or a fronted object-focus verb. That is not decoration — a definition needs its term stated first, which is exactly what inversion does.
Filipino citation is front-loaded: the source is named before the claim, not after it.
Ayon kay Santos (2019), tumataas ang bilang ng mag-aaral taon-taon.
Batay sa datos ng PSA, bumaba ang antas ng kahirapan.
Ayon sa pag-aaral nina Reyes at Dela Cruz, may ugnayan ang dalawang salik.
Sinabi ni Rizal na ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan.
Ayon kay takes a person; ayon sa takes anything else (a study, a report, an agency). Nina is the plural of ni — use it for two or more named authors.
Academic Filipino under-claims on principle. A flat assertion reads as unscholarly; the hedges of Lesson 5 do the work.

Sa madaling salita is the register's own plain-language switch — the signal that the writer is about to restate a dense point simply. Use it after your hardest paragraph, not before it.
"Ang wika ay tinutukoy sa pag-aaral na ito bilang sistema ng komunikasyon na ginagamit ng isang pamayanan. Ayon kay Santos (2019), mahigpit ang ugnayan ng wika at pagkakakilanlan. Ipinapakita ng datos na mas mataas ang partisipasyon ng mga mag-aaral kapag ginagamit ang unang wika sa silid-aralan. Maaaring sabihin na nakatutulong ang unang wika sa pagkatuto, bagaman nangangailangan pa ng karagdagang pag-aaral upang matiyak ito."
Four moves: define (tinutukoy bilang) → cite (Ayon kay) → present data (Ipinapakita ng datos) → hedge the conclusion (Maaaring sabihin… bagaman nangangailangan pa). That is a whole academic paragraph in four sentences.

Academic Filipino is careful, hedged, and slow. The next register is its opposite in temperament and its twin in structure: law and news, where the same inverted, object-focus sentences are compressed to the bone and the actor often disappears entirely.
