Argument with a shape — position, proof, concession, refutation, conclusion
Intermediate Lesson 19 gave you the moves: agree, disagree, hedge, persuade. This lesson arranges them. A C1 argument is not a pile of opinions with connectors between them — it has an architecture, and Filipino audiences hear that architecture as clearly as they hear the words.
Skipping step 3 is the commonest mistake advanced learners make. In Filipino argumentation, conceding first is not weakness — it is the move that earns you the right to refute.
| Frame | English | Force |
|---|---|---|
| Naniniwala ako na… | I believe that… | personal |
| Sa aking paninindigan… | It is my position that… | formal, committed |
| Nararapat na… | It ought to be that… | normative |
| Ang mahalaga ay… | What matters is… | pseudo-cleft, Lesson 3 |
Sa aking paninindigan, dapat ituring na karapatan — hindi pribilehiyo — ang edukasyon.
Good support does not repeat; it climbs. Each connector signals that the next point is stronger than the last.
| Connector | English | Position in the ladder |
|---|---|---|
| Una sa lahat… | First of all… | opening point |
| Bukod dito… | Moreover / besides this… | an added point |
| Higit pa rito… | Furthermore… | a stronger point |
| Sa katunayan… | In fact… | the clinching evidence |
Una sa lahat, mura ang hakbang na ito. Bukod dito, mabilis itong maipatutupad. Higit pa rito, napatunayan na itong epektibo sa ibang bansa. Sa katunayan, bumaba ang bilang nang wala pang isang taon.
The single most useful structure in Filipino argument:
"It is indeed true that… but…" — the nga is doing real work. It grants the point sincerely, which is what makes the reversal land.
Totoo nga na magastos ang panukala, ngunit mas magastos ang hindi kumilos. — It's true the measure is expensive, but doing nothing is more expensive.
Maaaring totoo na mahirap ito sa umpisa, subalit sulit ang bunga.
Kahit na may mga pagkukulang, hindi maikakaila ang naging tagumpay.
| Concession opener | Refutation pivot |
|---|---|
| Totoo nga na… | ngunit / subalit |
| Maaaring totoo na… | gayunpaman |
| Kahit na… | hindi maikakaila na |
| Sa kabila ng… | nananatiling |
A question that asserts. Filipino oratory uses these heavily, and they are far more common in Tagalog persuasion than in English.
Hindi ba't tayo rin ang magdurusa? — Aren't we the ones who will suffer? (= we will)
Sino ba ang makikinabang dito? — Who exactly benefits from this? (= nobody deserving)
Hanggang kailan tayo maghihintay? — How long are we to wait? (= too long already)
Repeating a structure across clauses. This is the most recognisable feature of persuasive Filipino — and it carries even further aloud than on the page.
Hindi ito usapin ng pera. Hindi ito usapin ng panahon. Usapin ito ng dangal.
Para sa bata. Para sa magulang. Para sa bayan.
| Closer | English | Tone |
|---|---|---|
| Kung gayon… | If so / therefore… | logical |
| Sa kabuuan… | On the whole… | summative |
| Samakatuwid… | Therefore… | formal |
| Nararapat lamang na… | It is only right that… | moral |
| Dapat nating tandaan… | We must remember… | exhortative |
Nararapat lamang na ituring nating karapatan ang edukasyon. Dapat nating tandaan na ang pamumuhunan sa kabataan ay pamumuhunan sa bayan.
Answer paninindigan, patunay, pagkilala, or kongklusyon:
Put the right connector in:
You can now build a case in Tagalog that a Filipino audience will recognise as an argument rather than a list. Lesson 10 closes C1 by widening your ear: everything so far has assumed Manila Tagalog, and most Tagalog speakers do not live in Manila.
